Plan for Halliwell church is unveiled

A MULTI-million pound plan to transform a church into a community centre has been unveiled to the public.

All Souls Church in Astley Street, Halliwell, is undergoing a £3.6 million transformation, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

To give the public a taste of what is to come, visitors were treated to a falconry display and an insect circus.

The ambitious design includes keeping the traditional exterior of the building and housing the facilities inside the church in two free-standing glass “pods”, which will provide high-level walkways with views of the stained glass windows. There will be a gym, and space for youth activities and adult education. The centre is expected to opened in summer 2011.

Matthew Mckeague, regeneration officer, said: “Around 200 people came to look at the plans and enjoy the events we had put on.

“The feedback on the designs was very positive. The traditional fabric of the building will remain with a modern element which will make it an interesting building.”

He added: “The development marks an investment in the community and there is a definite need for a community centre. Once opened we want to stage more events like the ones we had put on. They were just a taste of what is to come.”
