Minister to see major church plan

A GOVERNMENT minister is in Bolton today to see how a church will be transformed into a multi-million pound community centre.

Culture Secretary Andy Burnham will visit the former All Souls Church in Astley Street, Halliwell, to meet representatives from the £4.6 million project.

The Grade II listed building will be transformed into a multi-functional community building with provision for youth activities, a gym and adult education.

The facilities will be housed in two free-standing glass “pods”, which will provide high-level walkways with views of stained glass windows within the church.

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, said: “The plans for All Souls are incredibly exciting and will ensure the church remains at the centre of the community.”

All Souls Bolton secured the backing of the Heritage Lottery Fund which offered a grant of £3.3 million, with immediate funding of £265,000 to develop the project.

Mr Burnham will visit the church between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.
